Kuala Lumpur, January 1st An article in the Malaysian Oriental Daily newspaper pointed out that the "zero tariff" measures of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area, which was officially implemented on January 1, 2010, will not only bring to the Malaysian furniture industry. The impact will bring more business opportunities to the Malaysian industry as a furniture exporter.
The article said that compared with the peers of other countries in the region, the development of the Malaysian furniture industry is relatively stable. When it comes to meeting the ASEAN-China zero-tariff measures, it is more confident and believes that the free trade zone brings more Opportunity, not threat.
Xu Liangyu, Acting Chairman of the Malaysian Furniture Association, said that Malaysia has always been an important exporter of furniture products and has established a stable market. Therefore, the government has opened tariffs on furniture products four or five years earlier.
He said that compared with other ASEAN countries, Malaysian furniture industry faced the challenge of zero tariffs earlier and even set a blue sky.
He pointed out that the ASEAN-China Free Trade Zone will not only have an impact on the local furniture industry, but also solve problems that have been plagued for a long time.
He explained that when the government exempted the tariffs on finished furniture, the tax on furniture raw materials and accessories did not decrease. “In other words, on the one hand, we need to compete with foreign furniture manufacturers without tariff protection. On the other hand, the materials and accessories we use need to bear tariffs.”
Xu Liangyu said that local furniture has long competed with foreign players in this unfair environment.
He pointed out that after the official implementation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area starting next year, these problems that the government has been unable to solve will be solved.
Li Tianci, president of the Malaysian furniture industry, also pointed out that since Malaysia has lifted tariffs on furniture products a few years ago, the free trade zone agreement, which will take effect next year, will benefit the industry.
He believes that the tariffs on furniture products of other ASEAN countries such as Indonesia have not been lifted, so these countries will worry about zero tariffs. “But for us, this is a good time to enter the Chinese market.”
