Otto's CEO, Sam Jadallah, recently wrote an article called So Close, telling the story of his startup Otto being hit hard.

We want to be a favorite product.

On a summer night, I was invited by a small group of people to meet David Candaux, a top Swiss watchmaker. Normally, I wasn't too interested in discussing the engineering and design process behind the top watch, but my engineering team at Otto has been trying to create a novel gear structure for our digital locks. I also learned about well-designed gears. The elegance of the structure.

David Candaux is a master of Swiss watchmaking. I hope that his engineering talent in the dynamic structure of complex gears and small devices can guide the design of Otto's digital home lock core hardware innovative transmission system. The next morning, David Candaux wore magnifying glasses for making watches and was surrounded by the big cows of our Otto mechanical engineering laboratory team. We are like stealth operations, because this is the first time we have shown our gear system to others.

The time seemed to be still, until he said, "Wow, this is too big," and we laughed. He shakes our point of view. This is the smallest and most complex motorized gear system we have ever seen on a lock. The lab was very quiet and only heard the sound of the Otto powertrain turning in David's delicate hand. Turn, transfer, transfer, stop. Static, thinking, calculating, checking. . . . . . All this is repeated in stop and go. The ten minutes were as long as a few hours, and David no longer turned, then he pushed the special glasses up and everyone held his breath. Waiting for his judgment. David Candaux speaks as rigorous as he does. "Can I use this design?"

This is a familiar scene in Otto. In order to bring to our customers the user experience we envisaged, we had to invent a complex, precise and yet durable gear structure, like the "cute" children of Swiss watches and Volvo. Creating a new user experience means that we must innovate at every level, including display, function, material, latch, battery, gear, and user experience. We know we can provide customers with the safest locks and best user experience on the market. Innovation increases the cost of our time and money, but we know we can't ignore reliability, durability, and security. We seem to face some impediments that cannot be overcome and it is still impossible to solve them. We are struggling forward and believe that the creativity and perseverance of our entire team will allow us to find a way out.

Our team’s belief in this is profound. Many people have worked with suppliers in China for many weeks and many times. They manufacture precision parts and also design a production line that can assemble, test and package Otto on a large scale. After a hard day's work in the office, more than a dozen people will also hold a conference call in the evening to support the Asian team. They will also continue to work to provide repairs, updates or support so their colleagues can keep up. As a result, we work six days a week and we often have company-level conference calls at nights, holidays, and weekends.

Behind our hardware is the home access system, which may be the most secure, most reliable, and most scalable service platform in all access systems. In order not to be overtaken, our software team challenges ourselves to achieve a perfect user experience, so our customers will love our products and really experience the fun of using them. The software team's quest for reliability at each level (firmware, applications, cloud, connectivity, and data) lays a solid foundation for a better experience. We are committed to doing a lot of things well. We have made some functions more valuable than locking. "Press and Unlock" is a congratulatory one. It's an iconic experience. Each part is nearly perfect.

The most exciting team experience is that we need our team to be as consistent as possible with the product. Job titles are irrelevant when people fill in demand. Marketing, engineering, operations, and software work as a team to fix bugs, solve problems, and solidify products so that our products will be more reliable and work every time. Almost everyone told me how they grew up, learned and experienced the highest level of team work in all disciplines.

When we launched Otto, our market performed very well. At first we were worried that the price of $699 would be a bit high, but customers were very optimistic about the security, design and performance of the new generation Otto home access system. Test users like this product very much and it is also quickly maturing. More importantly, it represents what our capabilities are capable of and what we can do for the future. We have seen many people fall in love with our products. This is our biggest source of motivation.

So what happened? Last summer we started the next round of financing. In early September, a listed company understood our products and the technology behind the products. This is an opportunity. At first they wanted to invest, but soon they would buy us again. We do not want to be acquired at such an early stage, but they persuaded us that the best way to develop is to combine our innovation and their scale. We can focus on what we are good at, to accelerate the progress of our products and to go global. This is a change for us and for them.

The agreement we signed limits our ability to finance other parties and will end on December 12, 2017. During this period, we kept meeting, traveling, visiting lawyers, planning, and conducting investigations. After the monotony, we have established a close cooperative relationship, and together with them full of enthusiasm and into the future.

On December 11, they called me and told me that they would not complete the acquisition and would not consider investing again. I was shocked. And the reason I can't understand. We have to save money before the deadline and there is no other way. We cannot fail to tell the hard-working team that we are accelerating the development plan, nor can we say that the shares in their hands can also provide more economic stability. We must tell you the truth and the work can no longer be continued.

I define startups as companies that cannot control their own destiny because they rely on the financing of investors to work. When asked, "What about the company?", I usually replied, "I don't have a company. We're just start-up companies." Start-up companies are vulnerable to market finances and the things we go through. 2017 is a tough time for hardware startups. In addition, there may be new threats every day, from products to suppliers, markets, financial conditions, regulations, and competition. We learned to bite the teeth and cross over. I understand these risks, they may be very exciting, but at this time, these risks are devastating. The phone call at this critical moment is something we cannot afford.

Otto's team is particularly good, with experts and geniuses. We are proud of diversity and trust between each other. Everyone is important to the product because they are loyal to each other and support each other. They face each difficulty with flexibility, tenacity, and psychological power. We have laughter and laughter, as well as challenges to Taishan. We have also completed some things that others cannot do, and we have a united team. Our culture is personal responsibility and will give everyone a chance to win. The Otto team is supported by numerous investors who support our bold and ambitious plans. We will always appreciate their trust.

For our test users, pre-order customers, suppliers and partners, I regret that we could not bring Otto to the market. Four weeks ago, we could recover our first income. Seeing Otto light up and welcoming me home, it's really sorrows and joys. Otto will not ship next month and may never be. In the next few weeks we will evaluate our choices and see what we have left.

The Otto team created an exciting and innovative product. This is not a simple road, but it does reward a very high road. Teamwork, friendship, ups and downs, and a sense of accomplishment with a group of hard-working people will always be with me. I hope the whole team can also be like me. I think the only thing that makes me happy is to believe that Otto's team, technology, and the products we make are the seeds we plant. It will guide the industry in a new direction. As a result, the products that bring happiness will see hope.
